hello, so recently my gtx 660 has began always overheating, i took it to multiple repair shops and they all say that since it is only 2gb it wont handle my 30gb games, ive been doubting it so is it true or not?

Solution
If it is a dual fan model then it may be that the fan at the back of the card is failing, any and all monitoring software will only read the speed of the fan over the GPU (the front fan). If the rear fan fails completely a fire can ensue, I'm not kidding.

That's bs, gpu vram is responsible for textures, resolution etc, and has nothing to do with overheating the vram can only limit what image quality settings you can use and never has and never will have anything to do with game size on hard drive, i would not go to that computer shop again for support. If its overheating then its a problem with your cooler or thermal paste between the gpu and the cooler

cemerian is right. The guys at the repair shops are pretty much incompetent. The ammount of Vram has nothing to do with your over-heating problem. The vram is mainly in charge of textures while the gpu is responsible for actual computing ,and it is the one that heats up , not the Vram.
The size of games nowadays is due to the fact that developers try to pack them with as many high res textrues as humantly possible, to mask the fact that not a lot of effort has gone into actual graphics.
An excelent example of this was the recent release of Advanced Warfare , with it's whooping 50 gb install. Let's put it this way, the game uses a modified version of the first modern warfare engine (thats 2007 for ya), and the only thing that has gotten prettier over the years is texture surfaces, and not the actual effects , and graphics . Srsly , some aspects of AW look utterly pathetic for 2014 standards.
As a side note, some games like aw have no memory management whatsoever. The game fills up your vram no matter how much you have. (literally, it will fill up 6 gb if it sees that you have 6gb of vram).

What model of gtx 660 do you have , because a couple of brands have a problem with their gpu-temp sensor, where the sensor would fail, and the graphics card wouldn't know to throttle up the fan in order to keep it cool.

My money is on a fan problem

Well, if the pc restarts that's deffenately a sign of hardware faliure, (yea i know, i'm captain obvious), but it is by no means due to your vram. IF your vram woulld be deffective, your problems wouldn't present themselves as over-heating. if u still have any waranty left, you should pester the people you bogght it from to either fix it , replace it or give you your money back. I do have a little experience with pestering shops into fixing components for me , but you really really have to bug the living crap out of them , and call them constantly to ask for details and situation updates, because if you don't they will pay no attention to your components.
This summer i sent my mobo and cpu to get fixed twice . The first time i let them do their thing, and they did nothing for me , and the second time , i emaild them and called them constantly , untill they payed attention , and they ended up refunding me more money then i payed for them (cuz i got them on sale).

As a future refference , you should probably shy away from brands like inno3d , there are better brands out there that use better components for cards, like asus, or msi. Personally, i haven't heard a word about inno3d since i bought my geforce 6950 (and that was like 10 years ago).
