Hi, I'm in the process of building a new Gaming/HTPC Rig, I think I've got all the components picked out now, just wanted to hear some of your thoughts/suggestions on the setup I've picked out.

I've already got some of the components (I'm upgrading from an existing build) as you can see from the part picker list.

Just wanted to opinions/suggestions on the rest of the parts I've picked.

Thanks,

Patrick

Here's my partpicker list:

$1459.98 of that total price has already been purchased over the years. So there's actually only about $1100 worth of new components for me to add.

It would be fine as it is really, but since you asked here are my thoughts ;-):

-A different motherboard with built-in wifi, it is a little cheaper than buying the motherboard+wifi card on your list.
-The ram is a bit more, but is CL7 so is faster than the CL9 in your rig.
It looks like it costs more than your list, but you have $90 in mail-in rebates, so this list is cheaper at the moment of buying.

edit: only difference to take into account is motherboard and ram since you already got storage, psu and videocard

It's not actually costing that much, since I've already got some of the components on that list as I stated at the top of the post.
The HDD's comprise a lot of that price, and I've already got 10TB worth of HDD's, I just included them in the partpicker list to show the total rig.

I've already got the BR Burner, Video Card, and the PSU as well.

The total would actually be $1103.85 if you subtract the price of the components I've already got

Keep in mind, I didn't mention it in my first post. I'm also going for a Black/Red color scheme.

The CL7 is faster than the CL9? I thought it was the other way around...

Unfortunately a new psu isn't in the budget, what gains could I expect to get by going with a more expensive psu?

As for gains, there aren't any in performance. As for reliability, there are better options. The CX series has a bad rep because of the cheap capacitors used. They have been known to pop. Not everyone has this problem. And really, the CX series isn't cheaper by much. If you spent $60 CAD, you could have spent probably $10 more for a better option.

My two only other suggestions/opinions are: (1) buy the ASRock Z97 Extreme4 or Asus Z97-A but that messes with the color scheme. (2) Just buy 2x8 rather than 2x4/2x4. Some memory controllers have to be adjusted to support the additional modules. It's just easier to buy a pair.

I chose 1866 because Haswell chips benefit a little from the faster frequency.
