I have a dell vostro 3450 to which I inserted Samsung 840 SSD in addition to the HDD. I wanted to install Win 7 on the SSD but apparently you can't load the OS from a removable drive (I guess that's how win 7 sees the SSD). My bios recognizes the SSD and it's enabled as AHCI. I have done clean all to both drives and did a clean install of windows.

the obvious solution is to swtich places between the hdd and ssd but Dell have built this laptop in such a way that you have to take the whole damn thing apart in order to get to the hdd.

Does anyone have any other ideas?

Are you sure you set the USB stick up correctly (has the stick been made bootable?) You can install win 7 to an SSD with a stick. If you can try using this to set up and put win 7 on the stick http://wudt.codeplex.com/

You mean the USB stick I used to install win on the SSD? It works. I used it a couple of times. I even used it to install win on the old HDD and the computer works. But I want to install the OS on the SSD
