I just plugged my GoPro into my computer and downloaded all of my footage. This is my first time transferring my videos onto my computer. When I try to play the videos (that are in an .mp4 file), I hear the correct audio but the video just shows a black screen. I know that the file contains the right video because I have been able to successfully view the videos on other computers. This leas my to believe that the problem has something to do with my computer. Any ideas or fixes would be greatly appreciated.

Did you run Mpc-hc? Did you configure settings in Mpc-hc? The codecs can be changed by opening settings. Do you have the proper video drivers installed? Also try the pot-player and configure these video players with default file associations. Download the full version of K-lite simple mode, make sure to run as ADMINISTRATOR.

It probably has to do with codecs installing codec packs from the internet will resolve this issue. Try to use a video player with a lot of inbuilt codecs . That .mp4 .avi is just a container not a codec just so you know.

Do you have any specific codec packs in mind, or a good video player?

lav filters; https://code.google.com/p/lavfilters/ # high quality I also recommend madvr video renderer.

K-lite codec pack; http://www.codecguide.com/download_kl.htm.

MPC-HC; will probably work well. http://mpc-hc.org/downloads/.

It all comes down to personal preference but I think this will work fine for you ;)

Probably will want to tinker around with some settings in MPC-HC

Potplayer; http://potplayer.daum.net/ I like this one really.

could you mark answer as solution?

The codec's aren't working, and I have tried with no success to use other video players. I just opened a sample video on my computer called Wildlife.wmv, and the video still player with audio and a black screen.
