Hey guys, I need help as this is all pretty foreign to me.

I am trying to get wired internet from downstairs to upstairs via an already-installed ethernet port.

We recently moved into the home (built in 2008) and we have Verizon Fios set up. The modem/router is set up in the living room downstairs and connected via coax cable. I then connected an ethernet cable from the WAN port to the ethernet wall jack.

The "hub" (not sure what to call this) where all the Cat5 cables are located is in the master closet, and a bunch of them are unplugged. I tried every combination I could think of between "telephone in" and "telephone out" to see if I could get wired internet upstairs in the media room; no such luck.

What am I missing?
Did I plug the ethernet into the correct jack on the modem/router?
Is there an easy way to identify which Cat5 cable in the "hub" is the one that has the internet signal?

Please help, thank you so much in advance!

The telephone panel is not adequate for Ethernet, and will probably cause signal issues. So you should just take that panel out of the equation.

Provided the cables and jacks are properly wired for Ethernet, you should be able to get this to work.

If you want to enable all jacks for Ethernet, then you'll need a network switch inside the patch panel. A small 8-port switch is relatively inexpensive, although there are others...

If you just want one jack enabled, then you can buy an RJ45 coupler to connect the cable from the router to the cable going upstairs. You can purchase tools to help identify the cables, or use trial and error to find the right ones.

If the cables and jacks are not properly terminated, then you'll be required to do further work. You should be able to examine the ends of the cable and have a look inside the wall jacks to determine all is wired correctly. Plenty of resources to assist you.

Wow. That's exactly what I needed. I googled "network switch" and realized that I had something similar sitting in my box of cables and connectors. I plugged it in at the distribution center and plugged in 4 random ethernet cables and luck was on my side. Internet directly from the ethernet jack upstairs in the media room and the phone line works now as well since I'm not trying to send ethernet through the telephone panel.
