Hi! I've finally decided to upgrade my old Optiplex 980 to try to make it a gaming computer, and was wondering how I can actually do this. The computer runs an Intel Core I7 processor, 32 bit OS (planning on upgrading to 64 bit Windows 8.1), 4 GB ram, and runs at about 2.93 GHz at the moment. What can I upgrade on this computer to make it usable for gaming? I'm looking to spend around 200$, but preferably less so I can upgrade my keyboard, mouse etc. Thanks so much in advance!

That case can also fit a GTX 970 without issues. Alot of Mini-ITX size GPU's are available in the market which will easily fit inside that case. And a 300W PSU can handle that GPU with ease although 255W would be abit close to the edge just make sure you buy the version which does not require a PCi-e power connector. As you may not have one on your PSU.
But you should consider upgrading PSU anyway.

the system seems to have a decent cpu and ram so you'll need new graphics to turn it into a gamer.

from what i am seeing, the small case won't let you use one of the massive gpu's out there but there are plenty of low profile cards available. the real issue will be the power supply. it is WAY to small to run a new gpu. you'll need a new one of those as well to go with the gpu.

i can't tell what size the psu is from the specs or pics available on dell's site. that small of a case might have a small psu and not a standard sized atx one. can you look inside and see what size psu it is. you can post the model number and we can get all the needed info from there.

with this info and a budget it'll be easy to suggest a good upgrade for you.

The budget max is 200$, is there any way I can check the PSU without opening the computer? Not sure, but I believe this is the one http://www.discountelectronics.com/product?gclid=Cj0KEQiAneujBRDcvL6f5uybhdABEiQA_ojMgnstRZdDio0adJxcx5lYhE6bRNVUOelWFsMHZSTBt3IaAihL8P8HAQ&product_id=17579&product_model=30

And the GTX 750ti will work in the small form case of the 980? Without a PSU upgrade?

the 750ti should be small enough but i'm not totally sure about the psu. 305 was the largest one available but yours might be less than 250 watts which is pushing it even for a 750ti.

you'll have to open the case to be sure about the psu. it'll have a label which tells all about it. take a pic and post it if you want or post the model number. 300 watts would be enough for it but those smaller psu's are not. at least check the watts for the psu.

dell's page shows these 3 possibilities and need to be sure which one your working with:

Power

MINITOWER:
305W Standard PSU or optional 255W 90% Efficient PSU; Active PFC

DESKTOP:
255W Standard PSU or optional 255W 90% Efficient PSU; Active PFC

SMALL FORM FACTOR:
235W Standard PSU or optional 235W 90% Efficient PSU; Active PFC
