I have an Acer Aspire running Windows 7. My problem is that the ethernet connection will not work; however, the wifi connection does work. I am at a college campus, so I can't run too many tests, I am simply running the connection to the routers in the dorm rooms.

I have 3 ethernet cables with me, yet none of them can get the land line going. I have looked at other sources in terms of checking the "device manager", but the instructions to get there were not the same for me, so I couldn't check.

Any help on how to get this running is greatly appreciated!

(My wifi connection works)

Thanks!

Solution
1. open run window by pressing the key combination Win key + r
2. you will find a run box , in this box typ, devmgmt.msc
3.this will open the device manager which should look like this image (http://www.fixedbyvonnie.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/03/fixedbyvonnie-windows-8-1-network-adapters-wi-fi-device-manager.png)

4. if you observe this image , the 'network adaptors' entry is expanded and you will see another 3 entries , similarly, expand the 'network adaptors' entry and then see what all entries you see under it

kindly open up network connections, and check if you see an icon "local area network", see if its enabled or disabled. also check in device manager under the network section if you have an entry for ethernet or if there is an entry with a yellow exclamation mark or if there is an entry that says "unknown device"

In terms of local area connection, it does say enabled. Could you give more exact instructions please on how to find the device manager? I have looked at other instructions to find it and it seems that it doesn't quite match my computer layout.
Thanks!

So I have it up, and it reads:

Atheros AR8152/8158 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller (NDIS 6.20)
Intel(R) Centrino(R) Wireless-N 100
Microsoft Virtual WiFi Miniport Adapter #2

okay so your ethernet card is getting detected... keep your drivers disc with you, so that you can uninstall the etheret driver and reinstall it again.. u just have to do a rt-click on the entry 'Atheros AR8152/8158 PCI-E Fast Ethernet Controller' and then choose uninstall
