Ok trying to put a new build together and cant find much info searching around on the Xeon CPU's for gaming. For example the 1230V3. I always thought why are gamers buying a CPU that has graphics when they are just going to add a GPU card anyways? I have been looking to use the 1150 socket, leaning towards the 4690k currently. Debating going with the 4790k as it has hyperthreading, not sure if its worth it. Now the Xeons throw a whole other choice i have to make into the mix.

1. Can the Xeon CPU's Be overclocked?
2. Do they preform well gaming?
3. Are the Xeon a good choice for a gaming rig?

Thanks :)

The 1230v3/1231v3 is GREAT and I always recommend it and the H97 motherboard over the more expensive to use i5 4670k/4690k plus Z97 combo. At this point, they are pretty much compatible with any LGA1150 board. Just keep in mind that the 1231v3 is a haswell refresh and follows the same rules as the other refresh chips such as the 4690k as far as needing the latest BIOS update to work in the slightly older H81, B85, H87, and Z87 boards. Every H97 and Z97 will support tham out of the box.
The K-models can overclock and the Xeon won't overclock besides what you can do through the motherboard (very limited).

However, the E3-1231 V3 is a very capable processor with exactly the same specs as the i7-4690 (non-K) and with the lack of the GPU, it costs about $80 less and uses a little less power that the i7.

The new LGA 2011-3 sockets though, they are pretty much Xeons with overclocking, but they are very expensive and the completely wrong chipset. So yeah I would stick with the 4960K, solid CPU

I would go 4690k, or 4790k if you need hyperthreading, and save your money for better graphics/motherboard/ram/cooling/case/SSD/etc. 4690k/4790k is plenty of gaming muscle currently, no need for xeon, unless you have money to burn, and just want one (in that case go dual xeons!).
