G1 GTX 970 or Reference GTX 980?

Hi everyone
I need help. I'm upgrading my GPU and deciding between
GB G1 GTX 970 ($479),
MSI GTX 980 Reference ($594.5),
and GB G1 GTX 980 ($677.5).

I don't know why but in my country (Indonesia) the GTX 970 is much more expensive than what I see in the internet. So it's closing the gap to the reference 980. The reference GTX 980 and the G1 GTX 970 only differ by $115 here. If compared with G1 GTX 980 it differs by $199 which I think is a bit too much.
I read about the G1 GTX 970 can be overclocked to near as good as GTX 980 and the temperature remains around less than 70 degrees.
I read that the reference hit 80 degrees C at stock so I wonder if it can be overclocked. Heck I'm not sure it will perform without throttling at stock (ambience temp here is around 28 degrees Celcius) so I'm a bit afraid it will perform worse than the G1 GTX 970

So should I get the reference GTX 980 for just $115 more or get the G1 and overclocked it to match 970? But is it true that the g1 970 can match the reference 980?

Get the gtx 970 if you play at 1080p then gtx 970 would be more than enough plus you can always OC it if you want for some extra boost and you can save the extra money for future upgrades.

The reference GTX 980 would be still faster and better than G1 gtx 970 but generally the gtx 980 is about 15% faster than gtx 970 so you have to decide you are willing to spend the extra cash for that much performance or not .

BTW the main problem with reference designs are not low clock speed it can be Oced but the cooling system it generally much more hotter than non reference ones.

Hi thank you for your response. Do you mean the G1 GTX 970 without overclock or even overclocked?

about the GTX 980 reference, so in the end it can't be overclocked due to the temperature right? or is it okay to overclock it?

Don't expect an announcement before Christmas time for the new AMD cards. Rumors (which, granted, should be treated as such) point to a Q1 announcement.

I know this isn't the proper place, but AMD has already lost out on this series' battle since so many people have soaked up the 970. I would also like to point out that the website credited with such info does not have a perfect track record. Just trying to dispell the rumors.

Am I excited for the release of the 390x and such? Oh yes. I have no interest in AMD, but I am interested with what Nvidia will counter will ;)

Agree with you both. Yeah I'm also very curious what AMD will counter to these 900 series. Maybe after that NVIDIA will come up with 980 Ti or a new titan.
I haven't ever used AMD Desktop VGA before, do you have any experience with it?
What I heard is it is power hungry and hotter.
I'm a bit worried that so many games have NVIDIA support now and in the settings also there is shadow like PCSS if I'm not wrong is an NVIDIA technology. Also there is NVIDIA Physx which I really like. Will those work on AMD cards? Will it hit hard the performance?

AMD doesn't have physx its only available with nvidia cards but the difference is not that huge you have to watch gameplay o the two cards side by side to notice the difference like physx effects can be only experienced while explosion fire and sun rays so the difference is not that hard.

Currently the starting from R9 280x - R9 290x these are power hungry cards but the upcoming 20nm cards from AMD will be much more power efficient.

Never had any experience with AMD cards. Like I said before, I don't plan to.

A lot of AAA games and even Indie games have Nvidia optimization because it's simple for them to do it that way (apparently). Honestly, not many games support Nvidia Physx. I don't even think FC4 supports Physx and that is full Nvidia optimization.
