Hello. I am using some old parts from a previous build and adding some new parts and I've been researching myself pretty extensively, but would appreciate if anyone who has some innate knowledge to let me know if my build makes sense. I really appreciate any help given and please let me know if for example it just doesn't make sense to use these parts together. Anyways here it goes...

Old parts

CPU - AMD Phenom II X4 955 .....aftermarket improved fan added but not listed

MOBO - GIGABYTE GA-790FXTA-UD5 AM3 AMD 790FX SATA 6Gb/s

I have a 1TB HDD 7200 SATA hard drive that I can not find a link to as well.

New parts

Case - Rosewill CHALLENGER Black Gaming ATX Mid Tower

RAM - G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 8GB (2 x 4GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600

GPU - SAPPHIRE DUAL-X 100373L Radeon R9 280 3GB 384-Bit GDDR5

PSU - Rosewill HIVE Series HIVE-850 850W

Please help me out and let me know if these parts work together. Also, please bring to my attention if the CPU/MOBO is just too old to handle the GPU or something like that. I'd like this computer to be able to run the newer games at at least medium quality. Is my power supply overboard or is that a good thing because of possible future upgrades?

Solution
I'm not sure, I think the CPU will be fine, might need a new one to avoid a bottleneck but you should be good.
Your PSU is overkill. I would opt for a 700-750W atleast bronze+.
Depending on the resolution (assuming 1080p, you should be able to manage medium to medium high on new and old games (of course some games you might not. For example; crysis 3 and Metro Last light are very demanding and would run ofcourse at a lower fps than you might like.) and assuming frame rate desired would be 30+ then I'm sure the build will be able to handle it. :)
-EDIT- done some quick looking around your cpu should be fine but I do advice upgrading to at least the FX 6300 for somewhat better performance and a bit of future proofing should you wish to...
