How to use powerline network adapters?

I have a DHP-502AV and was wondering if i have 2 of these is that all i need. I plan on hooking one up to my router where my internet comes in to my house and the other in the upstairs room above it. I also wondering if the 2 adapters all i need or do i have to have a special router?

Plug one near your router and one near the device you want to hook up. Turn both all and pair them together.

The only other thing you need is 2 Cat5e cables to connect on each end.

How would you pair them together? They do not seem to be different and in the manuel it shows that i need some black router(DHP-540). Can i just skip the router and connect the two of them?

ISP -> router -> Cat5e -> powerline adapter -> house wiring -> powerline adapter -> Cat5e -> PC
