Hi, I have recently re-installed windows (cleared C: drive) and have been re-installing all the drivers I need to get my system working fully again - including the AsMedia XHCI Controller (version 1.16.2.0) which is supposedly meant for my USB 3.0 slots to work. However from what I am aware of, I have the latest drivers installed for the controller, yet my USB 3.0 ports do not seem to be working (any of them, 2 at the back 1 at the front) and despite this my USB 2.0 ports seem to be working fine.
Before I re-installed windows my USB 3.0 slots were working for the most part fine, so I'm sure this isn't a hardware malfunction but instead a driver issue, I have been searching the web for answers but couldn't find anything. Also, be ware that the devices plugged into the USB 3.0 ports are given power, but are not recognized in programs and do not work as intended - e.g my microphone does not show up under voice options for Skype). Any suggestions are appreciated - Thanks

NOTE: I am using the ASUS M5A97 r2.0 motherboard with an AMD FX-8350 8 Core processor on Windows 7 64bit

Hi,
"and have been re-installing all the drivers I need to get my system working fully again - including the AsMedia XHCI Controller (version 1.16.2.0) which is supposedly meant for my USB 3.0 slots to work"

Try installing the Asmedia USB3.0 Controller Driver, not XHCI Controller.

ASUS ASMedia XHCI 1.0 Controller is also known as File Name: Asmedia_USB3_V11620_XPVistaWin7_8.zip(5.4 MB).
A newer version is on Gigabytes website. (Version 1.16.12.0)

I would also clear the CMOS if you are reinstalling. That can often clear up problems. Latest BIOS version is 2501. (Enhance compatibility with some USB device)
