Can I format my iPod and install generic mp3 player software manually?

Basically my iPod refuses to restore under any reasonable method I have tried, and I imagine it should be easier to just scrap the whole iPod software and maintain it manually. I can't be the only one that has wanted an iPod that acts reasonably afterall. So if it is possible to completely reformat it, and install compatible, but generic software, or even the correct iPod software manually let me know please.

I would prefer a method that does not use iTunes if possible. I don't really want any of the iPod features, or the unnecessary (but amazing) iPod UI. If I can load songs onto it it and have it play them randomly I'll be happy.

[strike]Otherwise I guess I'll start another thread (or update this one, whichever is better for the forum members) and see if you guys have better advice than what I have been finding elsewhere.[/strike] It is an older iPod, a 5th gen 8gb iPod Nano. Any help is appreciated!

Update: After messing with my iPod all day, and then a few more hours after posting this, I finally got it to restore successfully. I would still like a way to turn it into an ordinary mp3 player, since it needs to need to be restored every time I sync it to iTunes (this is the third time this week), and being able to manually maintain it should increase its life time.

Seems like nothing past 2nd gen nano is supported, or being developed. This does look very awesome for the supported models though.
