Hi, I recently bought a new CPU for my rig on black friday at newegg, and I'm not sure what's wrong with it. I think it might be DOA because everything should be set up right, and I looked at every specification.

I bought the AMD FX 8350 8 Core (AM3+) to replace my old AMD Phenom II Black Edition (AM3) on my MSI 970A-G45 motherboard, which is AM3+. So basically, I took the old Phenom II out, put the FX in, mounted an aftermarket heatsink and fan, and pressed the power button and it turns on, but the screen doesn't show up, the monitor doesn't display anything, so the PC never booted. Then to make sure it wasn't anything else, I took out the FX and put back in my old CPU, and everything works fine. GPU powers up, system posts and boots. I tried this a few more times and reseated the CPU a couple of times to make sure nothing was wrong, and still same issue. I'm on using my old CPU now.

Is my CPU DOA??? I plan on calling AMD tech support, but I really want to get clues or solutions to fix this now.....

These are my PC specs

MSI 970A-G45
AMD Phenom II Black Edition X4 (old)
2x GSKILL Ripjaws 2gb 1600 DDR3 RAM
AMD Radeon HD 6970 DDR3 GPU
Cooler Master GX 650W Bronze Cert PSU
Seagate Barracuda 1TB HDD 7200RPM
Windows 7 Ultimate

At first, I thought it was a power supply problem, however my old CPU was 125W and so is the FX 8350, therefore it shouldn't be, right?

Thank you so much, all your feedback helps.

You do not want to run an FX 8350 on that motherboard. Its of extremely bad quality.

There is a previous discussion on the subject, an official statement by MSI telling us that the 970A series boards are NOT designed to run 8 core FX CPUs.

Even if the board is not the issue, I strongly suggest in investing in a better motherboard, and its VERY unlikely the CPU is problematic.

right Novuake is correct i missed the part where you stated that you have 97 g45, it's very much ill advised to run fx 8 core parts on that board, the vrm's are extremely low quality and it has only issues when running fx 8 core chips, as stated above a new board is the best option with atleast 6 phase vrm's or best case 8+2 phase vrm design

Just like everyone else here has said... 1st put in the old CPU and make sure you have the latest BIOS. 2 install the new CPU and reset the BIOS to default using the jumper. 3 The board just may not be suited for that CPU so you'll need a new board.
