Hey guys. So I ordered a lot of stuff from Newegg for my new build Friday. One of the things I ordered was the i5-4690k for $210. Saturday someone showed me a deal at MicroCenter for the i7-4790k for $260~. Is it worth returning the i5, paying a $40 dollar restocking fee, and spending an extra $50 or so on the i7. This computer will be used for gaming and then other stuff for grad school or financial things like excel and CFA studying. On one hand I feel like I'm not really going to see any extra gaming performance with the i7 and it's not worth the extra $100 to get it but on the other I feel like I missed a great deal on something that would have extended the longevity of my CPU in terms of keeping up with the gaming scene. What are your opinions? Should I save my money and use it to upgrade later in a year or two, or is it worth it to do it now, or what? Thanks in advance for the help.

The i7 won't improve your gaming performance.
It has more cache so it can help if you open huge excel financial charts (I am talking about at least 20,000 entries).
The PSU you bought is also an overkill wattage wise even if you plan to SLI.

Yeah, I figured 750W was a bit much but it was on sale from NCIX for $50 bucks and I was ordering my case from there anyways so I thought why not.

And okay, it's already been shipped so I think the restocking fee is a definite so boo.

So if I stick with the i5 (which seems more likely than not) will I need to upgrade my CPU and Mobo relatively soon (within a year an a half or so) or what is the consensus on that?

Thanks again for the help guys.

It is hard to tell.
If games suddenly require 8 threads to function (most of them barely use two today) the i7 will outperform the i5.
When will that happen, I dunno but you should be fine for 3 to 10 years.

Whenever you feel performance is lacking you will start worrying about potential upgrades.
