Hi, I built my computer a few years ago just before the sandy bridge i7's came out and my GPUs showing its age too much. I'm just wondering if I will have to update my bios or any other things I might have to do if I upgrade from my current GPU to a new GTX 970?

You won't need a BIOS update unless there are any issues that arise. Usually none.

1) Make sure your case can fit your new card
2) What model is your PSU? A crappy PSU is a prime cause of failed upgrades
3) Ensure your new card will have adequate cooling and airflow.
4) Wipe AMD drivers using http://www.guru3d.com/files_details/display_driver_uninstaller_download.html in SAFE mode and then install latest Nvidia drivers for 970.

I'll be doing a full wipe anyway as I'll be throwing in an SSD aswell but I was just worried I might have to update the bios for the GPU.
Thanks for your help
