Im really confused now I bought 1x8 DIMM 8gb ddr3 CL10 ram stick however on the note on the package it say UDIMM? Is it DIMM or UDIMM? And will a DIMM and a UDIMM worktogether with a B85 Anniversary MoBo??

Solution

They are. If it doesn't work then there is something wrong with the memory or with your motherboard.

DIMM refers to the formfactor of the memory module including mechanical interface, memory type, and pinout. DIMMs are available in several configurations, including unbuffered, registered, and load reduced. There are also fully buffered DIMMs but these are obsolete and incompatible with the other form factors.

The most common type of DIMM on desktops is unbuffered, or UDIMM. Given that UDIMMs require no special support, they are often just called DIMMs.

RDIMMs, or Registered DIMMs, buffer the clock and command signals. These are used in servers as they allow more memory to be installed without decreasing stability. RDIMMs often include an additional SDRAM chip on each rank to enable ECC.

LR-DIMM, or Load Reduced DIMMs, include a sophisticated buffer chip that fully buffers all signals to and from each rank. These are used in extremely high memory density applications, and are rarely found outside of data centers.

DIMM is an umbrella term or a series of formfactors for each DDR SDRAM generation including DIMM, SO-DIMM, miniDIMM, UniDIMM, and MicroDIMM.

Any DDR3-DIMM can be inserted into a DDR3-DIMM slot, and a DDR3-SO-DIMM can be inserted into a DDR3-SO-DIMM slot. This does not mean that the memory will work, just that it is mechanically compatible with the socket. Most consumer motherboards do not support RDIMMs or LRDIMMs, only UDIMMs. Ergo, only a DDR3-UDIMM can be inserted into a DIMM slot on most consumer motherboards. Most server motherboards support both DDR3-UDIMMs and DDR3-RDIMMs and extremely high end ones will support UDIMMs, RDIMMs, and LRDIMMs.
