Hey guys

I'm new to this board, hope I can find an answer and be able to help some of you too. :)

So I went berzerk on Newegg and updated my 5 yeard old rig, and two of my purchases were an MSI Z97 G45 Gaming motherboard with a Intel i5-4690k (Devil's Canyon).

To my great disappointment, things aren't working out as expected.

If I boot with nothing but the CPU on, the MB will whine about RAM, 3 long beeps. (That's good)

But as soon as I put on RAM sticks, whether all of them, or just one in DIMM 2, two in DIMM 2 & DIMM 4, well, nothing happens. The CPU fan spins, but no POST, no beeps :(

I'm using the onboard video for these tests.

My theories:

1 - Dead CPU
2 - Defective MB
3 - Both are perfectly fine, but the CPU (which was released in last June) is too recent for the BIOS version on the MB.

Obviously, you guys can't really chime on the two first theories, but what about the last ? I can say the RAM was tested in Memtest86 and they passed fine.

Did any of you with similar hardware face this possible issue ?

Thanks.

really?? my asrock has a sticker on the bios chip stating what bios is on it seems msi would do the same and not leave you hanging like that???

well if its a bios issue as stated above you will need a supported chip anyway to get it started to post in to the bios in order to flash it

tough call

I had the motherboard/CPU combo tested at a local shop and the guy said the MB is dead. I'll ask him what test he did when I pick it up so I can RMA it to Newegg.

Man, buying online is cool when you snatch special deals, but then DOA hardware is a bitch especially when you don't have double the parts to do the troubleshooting yourself and know what to RMA...
