WD HDD disk spins, not recognized in Windows, and PCB shows burn marks

Hey guys. I have a 1.5TB WD Elements external HDD. For the past year it was acting a bit sporadic, not showing up in Windows at times. Other times it would work, so I chalked it up to an intermittent driver issue. Today when I went to do another backup of my phone, I couldn't get it to boot. I tried connecting it to a couple of computers, but no luck. So I popped it open, and found this:

Burn marks on the PCB. I connected the drive directly into my computer and a couple of others, and no dice. The drive spins up just fine, it just won't recognize on any system I put them into. Any ideas on whether it's a good idea to try to replace the PCB? It'll run me about $50, which is better than a data recovery, but I want to exhaust all my options before I commit to this. Thanks.

Cold swapping the PCB on that model will not work. The ROM code will need to be transferred as well as it contains drive specific adaptive data.

Before resorting to attempting to replace the PCB try removing it using a torx screwdriver and clean the contacts on the PCB where they connect to the hard drive preamp using a clean pencil eraser. If that doesn't help, you can replace the PCB with another that has the same number printed in green on the board (2060-771698-002). Then you'll need to transfer the 8 pin chip labeled U12 on it to the donor board (using a hot air rework station). That should make it compatible.

Just out of curiosity what sounds are coming from the drive? It's not clicking or anything like that is is?

@DataMedic

There is an extremely faint, muted clicking sound, just a bit louder than the platters spinning. It didn't sound like the more harsh, distinct ones I'm used to hearing when a hard drive goes bye-bye.
