So I put together a new system.

i5-4460
Gigabyte H97M-D3H
G.skill F3-1600C11S-8GNT 8gb 1600 ddr3 ram
Sapphire R9 280 OC dual-x
Seasonic G series 650w
Win7 64bits

So my system was working fine for a week, then one day it just won't boot, all fans spinning, but no visual and won't boot, I have no motherboard speaker on the case so I couldn't get any beep code,

I tried remove the graphic card, and it wasn't the graphic card.
Tried move the ram from slot 1 to slot 2, somehow fixed it.(at this point I was suspecting a faulty mobo slot)

and then after a day of usage, I experianced system freeze twice, and after the 2nd time, the pc wont boot again, I tried remove the ram and put into slot 3(tried slot 1 and 2, still no luck), doesn't work. This time however, the system will try to reboot itself, fans/lights are on for 10 secs or so, and then it will turn itself off, and then turn itself on again and repeat, however no visual output just like the last time.

so I replace the ram with an used ram from another system, and it boots and loads windows fine, I will probably try and put my ram into the other system and see if it will boot tonight.

I have very little experiences with system diagnosis, does this sound like a faulty ram?
Please note I check the compatibility of the motherboard and ram, and they are fine.

You either have a problem with your ram, or your mobo. Try running a benchmark/stress test on the old ram. If it crashes then it is probably the mobo, if not the ram. Install the new ram in a old computer and do the same test. If it crashes, then it is probably your ram.

My new ram won't even boot the machine now, can I still test it? however the system will boot with a ram from a used comp. hence I am suspecting my new ram is faulty, I just want to make sure it's the ram before I go back to the shop for a replacement ram(the ram has lifetime warranty).

yes, i can't think of anything else it would be. as long as you have a lifetime warranty, they will give you a new stick free. You do know that you are running at reduced bandwidth with only one stick of ram right?

no, i have 2 8 gig sticks. you just have to make sure they are the exact same, and put them in corresponding slots. the slots should be color coded. thats it. when you look at your system then using windows key + pause/break you should have 16gb of ram. it will double your bandwidth too.

I can't even go into Bios with the bad stick, the machine provides no visual, and kept on rebooting it self (fans and lights on for 10 secs or so and then off and repeat). and I tried it on different ram slots, same thing happens.

as for the old stick from an old PC, I can go into windows without a problem.

However this faulty ram was working ok for a week or so. Does that somehow limit the chance of incompatible bios, as updating Bios is potentially risky, I am not 100% sure if I should do it.

have you looked on the gigabyte site for bios updates? see what the ones for your mobo say they fix, and make a decision if you want to install it or not. If it says something about recognizing devices or ram, you might want to install it. I just updated my bios and my computer works fine.

Yes, I just did, I think there are 3 new bios update, they are

Improve SSD Performance
Improve Intel K-sku CPU performance
Support NVMe device

Didn't mention anything about ram fixing.

I think the last thing to do is to plug the ram into my old machine tonight, and see if it boots.

Just swapped ram between the computers, the 'faulty' ram somehow works fine in my old computer, for the time being, I guess I will just leave them as they are. thanks for your time guys.

I am running prime95 and will be running memtest, I will see how they go.
