Hi

Can any body tell me if the Asus AMD Radeon R9 290 DirectCU II OC Graphics Card (4GB, GDDR5, PCI Express 3.0) would be a compatible upgrade to my
NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT

I am an amateur video editor using Sony Vegas Pro 13. I seem to have spent hours trying to work out which gpu to upgrade to. Any help/advice would be gratefully received.

Cheers in advance.

Alan

I think original video content is going to be unrealistic to send over as there are usually file size restrictions and your unrendered files should be exceeding that.

If you have a website you host your work on you can send me a link and I can grab it...

Vegas compute times with the AMD 290 is probably the best of any graphics card. However, as it's a relatively recent card it is usually combined with a recent CPU.

It will of course still work in your system, but render times may not be as fast as when combined with a recent CPU. It's still a very significant step up from the 9800 GT.

When it comes to compute and render times for video editing, AMD is the way to go even if an NVIDIA is better at other things. As an example the AMD 290 is not better than a newer and more expensive NVIDIA when it comes to rendering graphics in games, but for video editing, the AMD 290 would still be the best option.

I actually have a spare 290 so I could check render times for you if you want to get an idea of what difference it would make in your system.

You're fortunate that I still have this card as I should have put it up for sale last month. But since I still have it I'll be happy to run a test for you.

How long does it take for you to render at the moment?

To make a comparison I need to know what format/quality your input media is in and what settings you use to render so I can use the same.

Hi Lem

I don't think that it would be worth comparing the render times, mines infinte:)

Would it be ok if I sent you one of my project folders? Then you could see what the input files / settings are. Perhaps you could render the file to see what time it takes you with the 290 and may be advise me of the best settings for the rendering.

Any criticism (constructive) of the content would be gratefully received.

If you think I've got a cheek asking, I totally understand. :)

If you have a website you host your work on you can send me a link and I can grab it from there, or if you use a file/video sharing website I could grab it from there also.

As long as you can get the files to me I don't mind testing it out for you. Feel free to send me a private message here with any details and I'll take a look at it.
