4x4Gb with lower timings or 2x8Gb with higher ones

These two sets are both called Corsair Vengeance Pro Red and clocked at 2133Mhz, but the 2x8 version has higher timings - 9-11-10-30 vs 8-10-10-27 for the 2x4. I'm aiming at 16Gb total.

1. Which is theoretically preferable speed-wise?
2. How likely is it that one day I'll need the extra 2 slots on my motherboard afforded by the bigger sticks in order to go for 32Gb?
3. I haven't found any reviews on these kits, they seem to be new. Has anyone had any experience with them?

The 2 sticks will actually be faster when using 4 sticks on a duel channel board you loose about 5% of the performance of the memory this is the same amount if you only had one stick installed.
2133 is so fast you will NEVER see the differance either way.
Just to add I have no clue how you determined you need 16gb for a gaming PC you will never use 6gb so the rest is wasted money that could of been saved or spent on better performing parts.

Hi there,

The lower timings mean faster speeds. As for how much GB, it depends on what are you using it for.
For gaming 8 GB is enough, 16 is comfortable for photo, video editing, 32 is only justifiable if you do these tasks very intensively or using 3D modeling programs creating large, complex models, assemblies.

Lower CAS and higher clock will perform better.
However it is marginal (especially for the price premium you have to pay) for most applications.
Especially for gaming I would advise getting something in the 1600MHz CAS9 range (this is the sweet spot as of now price wise).

If you are mainly gaming, you are fine with only 8GB.

I'm planning to use the PC for gaming purposes only but I've decided I need at least 16Gb.
My concern stems from the fact that I think I've read somewhere that a 4x4 setup may somehow force the ram controller to decrease the timings, thus defeating the purpose of going for that rather than 2x8. Is that true? And why do you think they decreased the timings on the larger size sticks even though it's supposedly the same series?

The only difference in speed is between single channel and multiple channels (and it is not that noticeable).
Acutally quad could have a larger memory bandwidth but this is almost never the limiting factor (hence the almost non-noticeable difference between single and dual).
