Greetings TH community!
I've previously built a computer for my brother with an i7 CPU and a gtx 980 GPU. Anyway to make a long story short, his computer is a beast. It may not be SLI or 4k, but damn it can sure play most games at max settings and still maintain over 60 solid frames (Farcry 4 for example runs at 90ish fps)
Anyway it's time to update my computer since it's a piece of shite. I'm not exaggerating either. My current computer has a GT 620 and some i3 processor (Yikes!). Anyway I'm pretty much building everything from the ground up. The only thing I might save from my computer is the disk drive. I already bought a new case, motherboard, ram, and power supply. I will probably get an decent i7 processor in the coming week or two, but I am still a little iffy about the GPU.
I had my eye on a GTX 970. I'm not sure of the brand yet, but that was the card I was looking for because of the affordable price tag. Now I know the 980 is a fair bit better. I really don't have too much money to spend on a more expensive GPU, but I might if it's worth it. Now I am looking for a GPU that can last me at least 2 to 3 years. I don't have super high expectations for game performance, but I want my games to be fairly nice looking and also have 60 fps or better.
So I guess what I'm trying to ask here is how long will the 970 be good for? I know it's pretty good as of 2014, but when will it become more sub-par. I know there will be better cards within months to come. That's inevitable. But how long will my card be able to run the newest games before it's time for an upgrade? I am talking about 1080p nothing higher. Is it worth it to get a 980 instead because of the longer life?
Thank you for reading my question.
