I own a WD 1TB My Passport. The read and copy speed has become too low over the past few days. The drive still has about 140gb left.

Any cues on what the issue can be? and possible solutions?

Sorry but you did not mention that you were using Mac. You can check the drive's health through Disk Utility the following way: http://www.chriswrites.com/how-to-health-check-your-macs-hard-disk/

Hope this will help,

Yes, Pretty sure its USB3.0 Also, the drive has been in use for about a year now and the speed has gone down in the past 2 weeks. It can sometimes quote estimated time for copying as "over a day" for a 12gb folder. Have tried different machines as well as different data chords.

First I'd try a different port, and then an different cable, and finally a different computer entirely to rule out those things. If it still has the issue it could be hardware related. A drive that's struggling with bad sectors will become slow and eventually stop working entirely.

Make sure to back up anything you can't afford to lose.

Hi there rahulawtaney,

I would also say that you should back up the crucial data that is stored on the drive.
If the issue persists even after you do the things that DataMedic already suggested(cables, ports, etc.), I would advise you to run WD's Data Lifeguard Diagnostic tool and test the drive. The results will show you the overall hard drive health status and most probably what is causing the slow read speed.

Thanks D_Know_WD, I could find the diagnostic tool only for Windows. Is there a version for Mac as well?

Thanks
