MSIGTX970 Not Working with Gigabyte GA-H61M-S2PV

Hi All,

Just bought an MSIGTX970 as an upgrade for my somewhat outdated GTX550ti, and was slightly concerned about power needed to run it, but power calculator came out all fine and said that with my current setup it would run it.

Got it Monday, install new card, PC wont get past the motherboard loading screen. Two single beeps, One beep is normal on startup then get a second beep, followed by a few mins of holding on the motherboard manufacturer page then a black screen with blinking cursor.

The motherboard is a Gigabyte H61M-S2PV. The PSU is an OCUK550W.

The setup is also running -
1 X TP Link PCIe Wireless Card
2 X Samsung 500 GBHDD @ 7200RPM
1 X TSCorp Optical Drive
8GB Ram.

Some exisiting speculation has been -

- PSU is not powerful enough to drive the card.
- BIOS is out of date on the motherboard and needs updating.
- The card is faulty.

I have a reasonably good understanding of PCs, but once we get to a BIOS level I am pretty lost.

Kind of going around in circles with this at the moment

Anyone speculate as to which is most likely the problem?

The GTX 970 has a max power of 145W vs 116W for the 550Ti so unless your PSU was perfectly matched to your previous power consumption I don't think it is the problem. What is your PSU wattage?

Can switch back to your previous card and check whether it is working or not?
Did you touch at anything else during the mounting process? Check if all the cables powering the mobo, the card, etc. are plugged properly.

Have to tried the Safe Mode ?

It may be a faulty card make sure of it with a different PC if possible.

Is it a pre build model from HP, dell or some thing like that in that case they locked their bios so that you have no choice other than buy a new PC instead of upgrading it.

I have the same motherboard but revision 2.0 and have the 550Ti and also am looking at the 970 as an upgrade option but haven't yet decided. Have some questions in to Gigabyte before pulling the trigger on a purchase.

I believe that we must update the bios on the motherboard to the new beta version out earlier 2014 for the new cards to work. I am kind of scared to do this though so will see. Even with the 550 you should be able to boot into the operating system which makes me think of the bios update as first thing to do before deciding the card is bad.
