Gaming rig seems slower and sluggish than normal. What to do?

My gaming rig (which I put together 3 years ago with help on this forum) seems like it's got the flu. Games framerates are down across the board, and I can't figure out why. Am reluctant to shell out $$$ to my local IT store to "speed up my computer" for uncertain benefit.

The rig: CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 840 (3.2 GHz); MB: Gigabyte 990FXA-UD3: GPU: 2x Nvidia GTX465 SLI'd; 2x 4GB DDR3 RAM; TX750w power; Win7-64 HomePremium (up to date SP)

1) Use Kaspersky Antivirus to stay up to date on malware, etc.
2) 500gig HD where games are installed is perhaps 60% full
3) Update Nvidia drivers every few months or so.
4) Use Task Manager to shut down all apps except games.
4) Recently bought the second GTX465 for SLI; but it doesn't appreciably increase graphic perfomance

Maybe the rig is just old..but I'd like to get a few more years out of it, and figure out how to get it as lean and mean as possible.

Any advice most appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Just ran a MS win7 system diagnostic which pointed to my HD data transfer rate as the problem. It's got a 6300rpm speed...but short installing a RAID3 or going SSD is there anything I can do?

You have a good mobo, upgrade the bios and drop in a 8320 with an aftermarket cpu cooler and overclock.

Going sli with that particular processor was a big mistake, especially with a lower end gpu.

Sell them and drop in a gtx 770.

Much better system, and will last you a bit longer.

Thanks CPUs Authority

Why the 8320? No, don't answer that...it's the only real AM3+ choice. But only if overclocked.

And any particular cpu coolers you'd recommend?

And what about HDD transfer rate as a bottleneck?
