hello,
i'm planning on building a desktop for doing some recording via firewire, editing in ableton and cubase, and a little bit of gaming (DayZ,Chivalry etc..)

but i don't really know too much about this since it is my first time doing so,

So i did some research and came up with this build but now i want to know what you guys think of it. (since you probably know a lot more about it than me)

CPU AMD FX-8350 4.0GHz 8-Core
CPU Cooler Arctic Cooling Freezer 7 Pro Rev.2 45.0 CFM Fluid Dynamic Bearing
Motherboard Asus M5A99FX PRO R2.0 ATX AM3+
Memory G.Skill Trident X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-2400
Storage Samsung 850 Pro Series 256GB 2.5" SSD
Video Card Asus Radeon R9 270X 2GB DirectCU II
Case Corsair 750D ATX Full Tower $134.99
Power Supply SeaSonic 550W ATX12V / EPS12V

Build on PCpartpicker

and ofcourse a good firewire port, but i haven't looked in to that yet

any thoughts/suggestions?

simon mahieu

*FYI, i kinda don't want it to get too expensive, :s*

Solution
The Intel build below would have stronger CPU performance with no need to overclock.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant

CPU: Intel Xeon E3-1231 V3 3.4GHz Quad-Core Processor ($252.99 @ Amazon)
Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-H97M-D3H Micro ATX LGA1150 Motherboard ($88.09 @ Amazon)
Memory: G.Skill Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR3-1866 Memory ($123.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Samsung 850 Pro Series 256GB 2.5" Solid State Drive ($169.99 @ NCIX US)
Video Card: MSI GeForce GTX 760 2GB Video Card ($169.99 @ Newegg)
Case: Fractal Design Define R4 w/Window (Black Pearl) ATX Mid Tower Case ($79.99 @ Newegg)
Power...
The Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 AM3+ has integrated FireWire and will save you $30. It's out-of-stock but will come back in a few days at a higher price  Wait a few days after that, and it will drop back down to $100 or so.

A 2x8GB kit of CAS9 DDR3 1600 will work just dandy, and save you another $30-$40.

The FX-8320 is $120, and will save you another $30-$40.

Unless you just HAVE to snag that case, a similar cabinet can likely be found that could easily save you another $50-$60.

I'll split the difference with you :D

You open to an Intel build? At $1000 you will typically see better CPU performance from an Intel setup.

As far as your AMD build goes...

CPU Cooler - Less than desired. Lots of fan problems on those... It also would struggle keeping the 8350 cool if you plan to overclock.
MB - The 990 chipset is nice, but unless you are a serious gamer needing multiple GPUs it is a bit of overkill. Look toward the 970 chipset.
MEM - Overkill, but nice specs. They would be fine, but you don't really need memory frequencies that high or need to go with modules having voltage over 1.5v. Look toward low latency modules at DDR3-1866 1.5v (CL9 or lower).
GPU - You would likely be better off with a GTX card with your editing (CUDA).
CASE - Changed to a less expensive case. The 750D is nice, but is very large...
PSU - Good choice. The XFX Gold below is a bit cheaper at the moment and retains very high quality.

Solution
CUDA has nothing to do with 'audio editing' in Cubase, your mATX motherboard has limited connectivity (and a blocked slot with a GTX 760), the 990FX has 42 lanes of PCIe Gen2 bandwidth (as opposed to 24 lanes with the 970-chipset), integrated FireWire, and plenty of connectivity for DSP, MIDI, Sound (if the OP does not like the Realtek on-board) and even a separate FireWire card if he feels the need.

the integrated firewire does seem nice, you think this setup with the Gigabyte GA-990FXA-UD3 AM3+ motherboard you mentioned earlier would work fine?
