I'm upgrading my CPU to i5-4460 and need a matching mobo. The guy in the store told me to get a ASUS B85 Vanguard instead of ASUS H97M-Plus, because he says it's the newer, better model for the same price and the H97M-Plus won't work on i5-4460. Googling seems to suggest different, but I have no clear answer.

So i5-4460:
-> ASUS H97M-Plus MicroATX ?
-> ASUS B85 Vanguard MicroATX?

I recommend to buy the H97M plus instead of the B85. The H97 is newer model, and the MB does support the i5 4460, here from asus cup support list: http://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/H97MPLUS/HelpDesk_CPU/ the i5 need 0303 version BIOS, which is the 1st version one, you don't need update the BIOS, just use it as out of box.
But B85 you may need update the BIOS, because the MB need 1803 version (23/14/2014) cpu support list: http://www.asus.com/us/Motherboards/VANGUARD_B85/HelpDesk_CPU/ If the MB does have at least 1803 version, then you need other compatible cpu to update the BIOS first.
Also H97 has more features in the storage section. http://www.asus.com/us/Compare/
