Does the MSI R9 280 need to use both 6 and 8 pin PCI-E sockets?

Hey guys,

I am currently making my first gaming pc and i have a question about my PCI-E sockets on the graphics card.

From my PSU i have one 6 pin PCI-E cable, and on the graphics card there is both a 6 pin and a 8 pin connector, my question is do i need to use both of these sockets for my graphics card to work? If so what cable/ adapter must i buy?

Thanks

yes you need to use both for the card to work. your psu is not strong enough for that video card and adapters are not going to help this. there are molex 4 pin to 6+2 pin adaptors but they will not give that 8 pin connector the power it needs and can cause more trouble than they are worth.

if it's all new return the power supply and get a better one. if you post the computer's specs, we can help guide you to the right power supply for your needs.

AMD FX(tm)-8320 Eight-core processor 3.50 Ghz
MSI AMD R9 280 Gaming Graphics Card (3GB, GDDR5)
8 GB DDR3 corsair vengeance RAM
MSI 970 Gaming AMD AM3 GBE LAN ATX Motherboard
Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO (120mm)

I'm on a budget of around £50 for a PSU, can go a little higher if needed, thanks

either one of these will work but the 550 watt one gives you some headroom for future gpu upgrade.

450W would be too close to the edge.
