I am hoping to build a PC around the GTX 970 with a $700-800 total budget. Is this even possible?

I was thinking about getting the following parts:

  • i5 4690
    GTX 970
    2x4gb 1600 RAM
    240GB SSD
    1TB HDD
    Mobo capable of future SLI

Solution
Sorry but that isn't possible within that budget. Closest I can get you:

Rebates don't count and never do. I don't mean to be a bump in the road here, but getting that PSU would be pointless. The point is to SLI and a 650W will barely let you do that with 970's let alone a 550w. Also, there would be no broadwell support with that mobo. It barely supports Haswell and it may actually not depending on your luck.

just about the cheapest possible. though all those nice sub $60 rams are sold out. the next best is the cas9 1.5v 1600 xpg for $67

^ masterdell - i went with the thread title Least expensive possible GTX 970 Build?'

At no point is sli even mentioned in the original post-edit - my bad - apologies as I missed that last sentence mate.
As you said barely possible if at all - I dont see the point in buying a temporary 750ti personally - that's still a $130 expenditure

$120 expenditure that can be turned right back around and sold again for $100.

Okay so, added the 4690k because the 4690 is actually more expensive. If you want to OC in the future just put on an after market cooler and you'll be set.

Dude downgrade the mobo in that build and you're under 800, you don't need a z97 for this price range...

When you want to SLI you do.

For the sake of example I've done a white/black theme build there.

The amount of compromise required to get that down to $800 (1/3rd less cost) is going to be pretty radical no matter how you slice it.
