Hello! I am building a system and I got a gift of an old radeon hd 2900 xt 512 mb. I am wondering how it will perform while gaming. Also, is it compatible with the Asus M5a99fx motherboard? Should I get a new one?

Solution

I didn't say that it wouldn't work, just that it's not supported.

The HD 2000 series was maligned for being incredibly underwhelming when they were released in 2007, they're no better now.

Terribly. That card has not been supported by AMD for quite some time.

It will fit in any PCIE X16 (1.0,2.0,3.0) slot, but it is veerryy old. It launched/released in 2007 making it very weak to even the entry level cards of recent generations. It also is a DX9/10 card so it can't play most games that was released in the past few months or this year that are only DX11 compatible. It would heavily bottleneck the FX 9590 or any modern processor. The GTX 750Ti you had listed in the other thread is much better. Unless this is for a spare system to play some old games it won't be useful.

Also wrong section as you're asking about a GPU in the CPU section. I'm going to go look into the fans for your VRM in a second

oops sorry about that... Well the radeon hd 2900 is the one i have, the 750 ti is one i may buy that falls just into my budget. So if the radeon hd 2900 does not work, I'll get the 750 ti. So it seems like the old radeon won't work... It's a shame, but I wanted to upgrade it anyways :)

If the card is not broken, it will work. However, AMD dropped support for it quite some time ago so it will not continue to receive driver updates. Furthermore, it is only a DirectX 10.0 card so it will not run many modern games.

Yes, the 2900 XT is not a viable option for gaming. Even a spare Radeon 4850 I have is better than that and that was released around 2008. A 750Ti uses very little power compared to any similar GPU. I believe it fights well with a GTX 480 which was very good during it's time. It's a good pair to a FX 9590 as far as using little energy as the 9590 will be using a lot of power. But it can also be somewhat of a bottleneck for the 9590 also.

A 2900 XT will use up to 215W at Max Power. That is a power level of GPUs like GTX 680-GTX 780. A 750Ti will use 68-70W at it's peak. A 2900 XT can be compared to an Geforce 8800 GTS. They were okay/decent in their times but currently they're...Another problem would be that they stopped driver support ages ago. The last non-beta drivers were released in January of 2013.
