I'm not usually dumb enough to catch a computer virus, I did do a disk defragment a day before, maybe it screwed up my HD?? Is the any command line i can type for help with my situation? Or do i have to do a full restore. :(

If you have the windows cd , try and type in sfc/scannow , this will check your system files for errors, then ask you to put in the windows cd to repair broken files. If this dose not work, maybe your hard drive is failing. I would next try and type chkdsk /c: or whatever drive letter is assigned to the boot drive , for more options type chkdsk /? you will see a list of switches you can use /f will fix errors

Thank you, I'll try using my windows CD next. But I already did chkdsk /f and it didn't work. I don't understand how i can get into the log in screen and the gui bios, but not the main desktop. Thanks for the help.

I put the windows 7 cd in, clicked repair and said I need to use repair/recover disks. I have the disks somewhere, but they're also on a portable hard drive. When I plugged in the HD something showed up saying NTI Linux and the last restore point was 8/30/2013. Can you know why it said linux? And I'd really like to avoid restoring that far back if it's just a "simple" corruption kind of thing.

are you using windows or linux ? I dont know anything about linux but if you plugged in that hd and it made that reference then I would assume it has linux installed. If it was just windows then the windows install cd would be the one you want to use to fix files

I use Win 7, but i might have put linux on the hd. I don't actually know, I need to organize it. Luckily Windows already had a save point from 1 month ago. It was for some direct x upgrade. So all is well. Except now my DVI video cable isn't getting deteced....I'm just using a $5 hdmi cable right now. Is there really a difference in their graphics?

I think hdmi is for large flat pannel tv's , I would use vga or dvi for a pc monitor . Also Unless you partition a hard drive and set up a dual boot system then I would not recommend installing windows and linux on the same hard drive, my guess is that the boot file will be in conflict if you do . Better to do a partition , or install each os on there own hd

I've been told the only difference is HDMI can carry sound + video. I doubt this $5 hdmi cable is good for my system. I don't know about VGA, but isn't dvi newer/better?

I did actually partition my HD, but the portable one with linux I did not. Lol i feel so stupid, i just thought I could pick which OS i'd want to install.
