I upgraded my old CPU to an AMD FX 6300 six core today and I'm quite happy with it. However, the default fan for it is quite loud when playing high end games. I looked up good replacements and came across the cooler master hyper 212 evo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103099

I'm thinking of buying it, but I was wondering if I could unscrew the new fan from it and screw it on to the default heatsink the new cpu came with. Or would I have to replace the default heat sink as well? I've never replaced a heat sink before where I would have to reapply thermal paste.

I also read some reviews that said that it's quite large. Would it fit nicely in my Gigabyte GA78LMTS2P ? : http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0054OWT0G/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Well if the default fan is a 120mm fan then you are all good. But i have a feeling that its not going to be a 120mm fan.

Instead you will need a new CPU cooler. That CPU cooler you linked to (Cooler master one) is a good one to go with

thanks. I looked up the mm size for the default fan and it looks like its usually 60 mm, so i would have to replace the whole cooler.

Yeah im not familiar with AMD parts but thats the general rule (Small stock cooler). After market coolers are usually quite and usually somewhat affordable
