Hey everyone.
This might seem like a noob question but I'm so overwhelmed with options that I decided to just describe what my issue is and hope people with more knowledge than me can point me in the right direction.

I am sick of playing AAA games at 30-40fps. I'm also sick of games hiccuping and dropping to 20fps whenever I'm in a very busy area (20+ NPCs, trees, etc). For example Dragon Age Inquisition plays around 34-40fps but dips to 22-25 in Redcliffe Village.

I play at 1920x1080 and currently have a GTX 660 2GB SC

My system is an AMD Phenom II X4 840 3.2Ghz with 8GB RAM

Also, I really like MSAA.

So what do I need to upgrade and to what in order to get to play as close to Ultra settings with some MSAA (at least 2x) and get fps of around 50 or even 60?

Please please please give me suggestions and if you can explain a little what would improve my gaming experience in the fields that I require it to.
I think I'd rather stay with GeForce as I've generally had issues with Radeon cards.

If you still want a new GPU after upgrading a CPU I'd go with the GTX 970. The price to performance ratio is pretty nuts. Nothing but good reviews that I've seen also. Good luck!

The system is decent as it is. Do not think that the CPU is a major bottleneck.
Although probably the CPU is the reason for the hiccups, you can check this in windows task manager - open task manager (ctrs+shift+esc), put it on performance tab.
Start a game - enter a populated area, open desktop with win button or alt tab, check the CPU load graph.
But to get a significant performance change - latest gen i5 + GTX 970 (new PC).
Based on Firestrike results - performance will increase ~ 3x.

Thanks guys! To upgrade the CPU means also upgrading motherboard and power source etc?

A friend is selling an AMD FX BULLDOZER fx 6300 SIX CORE 3.5GHZ WITH 14MB Total Cache
Is that good?

Yup Fx-6300 is good. But you'll need to overclock it to get good performance out of it. So you'll need a good motherboard and good cooler as well. Which PSU do you have?

No idea what a PSU is? LOL
I did the test and the CPU was at 100% during loading the city area and then down to 85% for the rest of my playthrough.

Also you think it would be cheaper or same price to just buy a new computer?

But are you saying with a better processor, I'll get higher framerates in AAA games like Dragon Age Inquisition, while keeping the same gfx card? You guys are making it seem like this card should be achieving way higher fps and it's the CPU that's bringing it down...

PSU--> Power Supply Unit
Getting a new PC is certainly better than getting old PC parts. You can move in your GPU,RAM,HDD,Case. So you'll just need a new CPU and a motherboard, PSU if it is a crappy one.
And yes the CPU is bringing the GPU down. That's what the word "Bottleneck" means.

Thank you!
There's so many options though for CPUs, what should I go for? Is Intel waaay better than AMD? The guy who built my current rig insisted AMD is just as good...

And is 8 core needed or will 6 core be enough?

I know we've strayed from the forum which is supposed to be about graphics but again any help is appreciated since there's so many options out there!

8 cores and 6 cores aren't needed currently quad cores would be enough. And yes intel is better than AMD when it comes to gaming.

So, last question: i5 Haswell 3.1Ghz will be significantly faster than my current Phenom II X4 3.2Ghz?
