Laptop's External Graphics Ports Restrict Resolution to External Monitor

I own the following:

Lenovo Y510p with dual NVIDIA GeForce GT755M 2GB graphics cards
Dell U2713HM 27" Widescreen LED Backlit LCD monitor

I bought the Dell monitor to use instead of my laptop's built-in display for image editing and CAD work. The problem is the laptop only has VGA and HDMI outputs, so the max resolution the ports can output is 2048 x 1536 (VGA) and 1920 x 1080 (HDMI) whereas the monitor has a native resolution of 2560 x 1440. I am currently using the laptop's VGA port because of its higher resolution, but because it is still less than the monitor's native resolution, it doesn't look very good (not sharp). According to the specs, a GT755M will output a maximum resolution of 3840x2160, but the port resolution limitations on the laptop negate that nice, high resolution.

What are my options so that I can view a sharper display?

1. Ditch the laptop in favor of a desktop that has more port options, like Dual-Link DVI and/or DisplayPort, that support the higher resolutions?

2. Get a laptop that has more high-resolution port options? I don't think there are any.

3. Set the graphics card to a resolution that interpolates "better" (i.e., sharper)? On that note, I have heard that dividing the native resolution by a whole number so the resulting resolution is a whole number will result in better rendering due to less reliance on interpolation. So, dividing 2560 x 1440 by 2, for example, would result in setting the graphics card to a resolution of 1280 x 720. I haven't tried this option because that's a huge waste of pixels, IMO.

4. Any other options?

Thanks in advance for all your help.

Yeah, unfortunately the model you have, they didn't put displayport or mini-displayport on it. I'd say try to go with the HDMI even though it sounds less than the VGA's 2048x1536 and see if your monitor can auto-scale the 1080p to 1440p.

Thanks for your input. It's looking like I will need to either get a different laptop or desktop that has the necessary high resolution ports.

Thanks again.
