Hi all,
I built a PC to be a light gaming pc about a year ago. I put in a 1 TB HDD with the intention of getting an SSD when I could afford it. So what I need to know is would a 250 GB be enough for windows 8.1, steam and all its installs, wow, and things like that. I know I will have to install windows on it, so I will need to wipe the HDD of the OS. That brings me to my next issue, when I first built the PC I had intended to duel boot windows and Linux so I could learn Linux. Due to a time crunch on getting windows I had to abort that plan. When I did that I deleted the partition I created for the Linux install and noticed it did not fully remove everything, is there a way for me to insure that I wipe everything off the HDD?

250GB is enough for windows and some games, but you're going to have to pick and choose which games you want on SSD vs HDD. Install the games you play the most or the ones that have the longest load times on the SSD. There are some games like BF4 that let you start playing as soon as you load, so I would definitely put that on the SSD. I'm running Windows 8.1 with some steam games installed and not much else and I'm using around 380GB of HS space.

As for wiping the HDD, you can use FDISK or the install utility when you boot the windows install disk or remove the partitions and wipe everything. Once you've installed Windows, use grub to create a dual boot of linux. I would explain further, it it's really pretty simple.

My 2 cents...

1) Install SSD and install windows first. During install blow away partition(s) on HDD and format should give you a clean drive. You can partition now or...
2) You can then install linux and that install should allow you to create a partition for linux. Just leave adequate room for windows and windows applications.
3) I would install steam, WOW, etc... on your HDD instead of the SSD. The SSD wont give you any performance improvement for games, maybe just load faster \ load levels faster. I would try to keep any programs other than the OS off the SSD if applicable

The cheapest 250gb SSD right now is the A-data premier pro sp600 for $79.99. If you want to shoot for a 512gb SSD the cheapest one is once again A-data premier pro sp900 for $180. As for the OS just move it to the SSD and your load times will be about 50% faster. And finally for the HDD you are going to want to go to youtube and look up how to wipe a hard drive. :D
