i have an old prebuilt i've been upgrading, i'm gonna upgrade my cpu and motherboard soon, i already have my 500 wat evga psu. :) i kinda asked this and some other questions and they were very helpful. Bottom line is i have an old AMD Dual Core CPU clocked barely under 3ghz, how hard will i bottleneck this 7950? I know i can put it in my computer and everything. But will i at least be able to run any game i want on High with no problems? Worst comes to worst, Medium at least till i get my new CPU and motherboard:/ ? Thanks for the help!

Solution
You can probably play Diablo III since the minimum system requirements are so low. Like clutchc said, give it a try! And start planning to upgrade that motherboard and cpu.

The short answer is yes it will definitely bottleneck. You will certainly not be able to play any game you want as some games won't run with your cpu (its just too weak these days). Some games will run but will run very poorly since the 7950 will be hampered by the old, slow cpu. Older games should run ok, but if you really want to play modern games you'll need to upgrade the cpu/motherboard. If you already have the 7950 then you might as well install it and try it.

Yeah, i bought it off ebay. i know it's such powerful card. I won a bid on it and got it for 104 dollars :) . But since my CPU was also supporting the graphics. Don't you think it should be a bit more .. stronger? even in the slightest? because now i have a graphics card? And i'm going to upgrade once i get my paycheck. But i couldn't run modern games not even on normal settings with MSAA and everything like that turned down for now.. ?

Yeah, that processor is near the bottom of the food chain, so to speak. My Athlon II X2 270 @ 3.4 GHz was barely able to keep from bottle necking my GTX 750 Ti. The CPU would be at 100% usage in most games trying to keep up the 750 Ti. Although in most games I have, it allowed the card to reach near 100% usage. Your CPU is far less capable than even my lowly Athlon II X2 270. And your HD 7950 is more than my 750 Ti.

If you have a decent PSU, the card should work (assuming HP hasn't locked the BIOS). Try it and see.

Specifically which games do you want to play? Take a look at their minimum requirements. Most popular new released games are not going to play on that cpu. Yes, the system is "stronger" with the 7950 rather than the integrated graphics but most popular modern games require a stronger cpu to run. Also, the 7950 is a powerful graphics card and needs to be paired with a modern cpu to take advantage of it.

It's ok, don't freak out. The 7950 is a good card and you can use it when you upgrade to a new motherboard and cpu.

You won't know till you try it. Pop it in and see if the HP recognizes it. That's the first hurdle.

Yeah.. the 7950 is a pretty beast card. My friend had told me that i'd at least be able to run things on medium settings.
