I am trying to get my Shure sm57 to work with an external sound card I just bought ( http://www.ebay.com/itm/USB-6-Channel-External-Sound-Card-5-1-Surround-Adapter-Audio-S-PDIF-for-Laptop-/370828387827?pt=US_Sound_Cards_Internal_&hash=item56571825f3 ). When I plug it into my PC there is a lot of noise. So I bought the sound card to eliminate any noises from within the PC. However, when I plug the SM57 into the sound card there is no output. I've tried all my other microphones and they all work. As I said it works when plugged directly into the pc, but not through the sound card.
Any fixes?

Well, it is very likely then that your SM57 is rather faulty. If you still have the receipt, I recommend returning it and explaining the problem. It wouldn't be related to the sound card, unless of course it isn't registered on it as what it actually is (sometimes I have to assign the used plug as mic, headphone, etc to get it to work).

Thanks for the reply; I suppose I could try returning the microphone. Before I do, there is one more thing I would like to try. I tried plugging the microphone through the sound card again and found that when I turn the sound from the recording and my headphones right up, I can hear myself. When I do this, there is of course a lot of noise. What I was wandering is of I need some sort of amplifier between the microphone and the sound card. (pre amp?)
If this does not work there is probably as you say something wrong with the microphone.
Thanks again.
