Intermittent Limited Connectivity

I've used comcast and a linksys modem for many years. I finally upgraded my service with comcast/xfinity to the fastest they had, exchanged my modem for the faster one at the comcast/xfinity store for free, and bought a better linksys router. The modem is an Xfinity Model SMCD3GNV and the router is a Linksys E8350.

I have 3 kids, two with laptops and one with a desktop, I have a laptop, and a few cell phones and other iPad / Fire HDX types (all are wireless, different cards or sub sticks or internal hard wired). They are scattered around the house. Some very close, some a little further, and some upstairs. I first called Xfinity and had them disable the internal router (that can only be done on their side). I then installed my router with the CD and followed the on screen instructions for setup, creating a name and password for where to connect and what password to type in.

When the devices are on, every once in a while to frequently, one of the computers will show "limited connectivity" and not have access to the Internet, yet all of the others will be working fine. It happens to all of them near and far from the router, and all show full bars. The phone and other devices that are not computers don't seem to be affected, but are not used very much in the house anyways, so diagnosing them would be difficult. We have tried turning all devices off when this happens to one and nothing. We have tried doing that following the diagnose thing at the bottom where it runs through resetting stuff and finally telling me to unplug everything, wait, restart everything, and see if that works. So I di, and it doesn't work. At the same time, while one wasn't working and one was, after the reset, it is still the same. The same computer is working and the other isn't. If I turn off my computer, or just let it sit for hours...or overnight, it will be connected automatically when I wake up or startup. Also, this isn't that one computer goes down when one is up sort of thing. All computers can work fine for a while, hours even, and then one will go down for no reason. This happens to all of them at any given time. I have reset everything many times, deleted my internet card stuff under device manager and let it reinstall it when rebooted and nothing again.

I don't know what's causing this to know who to call, what to replace, or if it's just a simple fix.

My old router, I could type an IP address and check everything, but this one has a program that doesnt show very much. I read on my modem I could use 10.0.0.1 to get in, but that doesn't seem to work.

Since this isn't one computer, it happens to all, some on windows 7, some on windows 8, all different types, only constant is they are wireless, I don't know where to start. When the limited connectivity happens, if I plug it directly into the router, it works (if that helps).

Do I call the router help desk and stay on hold with them? The modem help desk? Is is a settings thing in my router or modem? On all my computers? Or is something just broken and needs to be replaced? I'm at my wits end and I'm not an IT guy, just a Dad that wants to get his kids back online (their homework is done online!).

Please help!!!

Sounds like your router's DHCP scope doesn't give out enough IP addresses. You should be able to expand the lease scope to include more IP addresses.

Open up a command prompt and type in this: ipconfig /all

The IP address listed under "Default Gateway" should be the IP address you can type in to access your router's settings. From there, go into the DHCP server settings and expand the scope (allow more simultaneous connections).

Ok, so I figured out that I have to be online to get the default gateway to show me the IP address. Once my no connectivity reset with letting windows fix it by right clicking and having it troubleshoot and then reconnect, I found the IP address and got to the login for my router. By the way, normally the right click windows troubleshoot reconnect usually never works. Anyways, I don't know the username and password. Did I set one upon the initial install with the CD? I tried admin and no password, but that didn't work.

yeah the only thing I can think of is that your DHCP leases are becoming completely filled up in one day for whatever reason. Try increasing the number of users to 100, and if it does not automatically expand your lease scope, manually change that last number from 149 to 199
