I have an older Dell INspiron 1501 -AMD TK55. I cloned my 120GB WD to as Crucial MX100 256 gb. Thought I had followed all the steps, but performance isn't what I expected. I used Acronis True Image that comes with the SSD. Once completed, and it all worked, I used Acronis to review the partitions. It tells me the partition alignment is incorrect. Is there a way to do this alignment without losing data? I have the original HD and could reclone with other software, but how do I make certain the partition alignment is proper?

Solution
Try using Clonezilla. I have cloned quite a few systems with SSDs using it (going from SSD to SSD as well as from a standard drive to SSD) and have not seen any odd issues with it.

On the other hand I did not check the exact details of the partition so maybe it does the same thing and I just don't notice it.

Where does that come from? Almost every thing I found has people going from smaller Gb HDD to bigger SSD.
There are a few who move specific info to SSD and keep the existing HD.
My situation is a 120 GB WD HDD, I wanted more space and the price for SSD is getting more affordable.

My only issue is the partition alignment --and from reading Toms and a few other links - I'm seeing an issue (possibly) with Acronis True Image that inherently uses 63 rather than 64

"It has to be a multiple of 64. that is 64,128...1024,2048 etc.
Very crudely put, SSD write in 64 blocks. If your alignment is 63 (as set by Acronis) each write/read will span two blocks etc. Hence the so called 50% inefficiency."

I saw a tech from Acronis said this would be fixed referring to 2010 (I'm using Acronis True Image 2014), so it hasn't been fixed (in my view).

I can redo the cloning (with other software) but how do I ensure proper partition alignment?
