OK guys i am new to overclocking and i wish to try and overclock my processor. i currently have my ram OCED. i have the CORSAIR H60 hydro series cpu water cooler and i am wondering if it would be safe to overclock my processor. and if so what would you reccomend i put it 2? 4GHZ is working for me but im curious to see the differnce in benchmarks. my buddy has the 8320 8 core and me and him have bin having benchmark wars for the longest time. his overclocked and mine stock clocked. recently he finally beat mine scores. and i wish to OC my processor if possible to beat his. i held the record for the longest time. probly about 2-3 months but he just now beat it.

You want to put it to 4.2 on the current motherboard then make sure you have good cooling especially over the VRM's and a good PSU ofcourse. But I would start with 4 Ghz and then gradually increase it.
And 4.2 with those 990FX motherboards is no issue.
As for the performance yes, you'll see some improvements.

My Motherboard doesn't have VRM cooler and it can OC my 8320 up to 3.7 Ghz. Apparently thought if I put a fan on top of the VRM's or buy a heatsink for it I can OC to 4.0 Ghz

You should get the 990FX UD3 or M5A99FX Pro 2.0. These motherboards are solid overclocking performers.
The Sabretooth R2.0, Crosshair V Formula Z, 990FX UD7 are the top performers.

I wouldn't trust a CX to handle high overclocking.

I'd recommend the mobo they're using if they're getting it up to 6ghz.
