So, there's a guy going on a typing rampage saying how the 8350 is better than a 4790k.

Help me either find the error of his ways or his secret intelligence.

So my question is, is the AMD FX-8350 better than the Intel Core i7 4790k overall, or not?

No fanboyism, please. I want a short, direct answer, and one detailed explanation.

Solution
The i7 is better in every way except in cost. It's faster, more efficient and wins in virtually every every test.

The architectures are different. Intel processors are stronger in single threaded applications which pretty much dominate dominate the gaming area. As previously said, there are very few games that actually use more than 4 cores and even then, there's negible difference between an i5 and the 8350.

AMD processors are strong in Multi-threaded applications or core intense applications. Many people buy an 8 core CPU for video editing which do better compared to an i5 but not an i7.

There's also no upgrade path or new generation CPUs from AMD AM3+ line.

There are two ways to shut the fanboy up, ask him to post credible...

If you have the money, then the 4790K is better. I'm an AMD fan boy, but Intel still has the majority of the market, and for a good reason. 22nm vs 34nm, also intel chips (normally) have large caches, they also have Hyperthreading which can boost performance greatly.

Currently the FX 8350 is 150$ while the i7 4790k is about 300$. So you might think that the i7 must be 150x times faster or better than the FX 8350. The answer is just simply no, it is not even 2x times faster than the FX 8350. In games or general use both of the CPU's will run pretty much the same (Intel will have slight edge on same games and applications)
The thing is AMD has better value than the Intel, and not to mention that FX8350 can be overclocked on cheaper Motherboards, so overall the FX 8350 + 970 chipset motherboard is on cheaper platform for gaming or content creation.

gotta say, im not sure of the performance difference (although i imagine the i7 is better) but i would go for the 8350 purely for the price diference. Sink that extra money into a better graphics card or something. just my opinion

Better value is different from better which is what the op asked. And your maths is wrong, no one would expect a $300 item to be 150 times better than a $150 item, because 300 is not 150 times 150. You've added instead.

In games they will not be the same. Most games are still optimised for 4 cores and assuming you are not gpu limited, the 4 strong cores of the i5 or i7 will easily beat the 8350. Then you have to consider the efficiency, intel does it with less power and heat. AMD themselves recognise they are generations behind intel with high end cpus and have chosen not to compete in that area, going for apus instead.

CPU selection is highly context dependant, both on budget and other components.

If you're gaming and can afford a i5 and R9 290, a 8320E and GTX 970 and a i7 and R9 280, I'd go for the i5.

If however, you can only afford a R9 270 or something similar if you go for the i5, I'd grab one of the new FX -E processors, or even a FX 6300

If you're doing heavy video editing/rendering, or anything that responds well to threads and not as much to GPU power, I'd go for the i7. A 5820K if possible.

If you're doing both and don't plan to overclock, I'd get a Xenon 1230v3 or 1231v3 and grab the best GPU you can.

For the last three scenarios, 16 GB of RAM is also recommended, for the first, 8 should suffice.

I've seen many articles where these 2 CPU's were benchmarked. In some cases the Intel was ahead by 2-3 fps at best. Some games the fps was the same. In fact at 4K the AMD pulled ahead. So is double the price worth 2-3 fps when they are both running at 80+ fps? Not only no but hell no.

Don't shop by brand.Shop by what gives us performance, quality. And I make it crystal clear that both Intel and and make extremely high quality micro processor.

you have to make your choice , AMD runs at a higher clock speed at a cheaper price , so if your game doesn't require the thread and core technologies that intel seems to be so goot at , then it's better not to waste your money on AMD or wait for the AMD with DDR4 and pcie 3.0

Also AMD doesn't come with the internal graphics processor nonsense , because when you play games you gotta buy a huge GPU of your own you can't play real games with the onboard gpu , so AMD is the better choice
