i need to find a $300ish way to upgrade my computer for some more intense games, whether it is buying a new processor, a new graphics card, or buying a second graphics card of the same type and doing SLI or crossfire.

Just wait for a 970 to go on sale. For future upgrades like a 1440p monitor will work better on a 4gb card. Pretty much within the next two years you will see the mid-high ranged video memory standered moving towards 4-6gigs. You would get decent frame rates with sli but you won't be able to up your monitor res in the future. I don't even consider a computer running games @ 1080p a real gaming system. The 1440 and 4k monitor will go down a lot more soon.

A GTX 970 is a good option, since your processor is i5 I don't think you need to upgrade it any further, SLI 660s is a very good option too but I would actually go for the GTX 970 because 4GB VRAM is good for any resolution or multiple monitors and the CUDA on the card is very good too. It'll practically replace two 660s. By the way upgrading to SLI won't increase VRAM, it'll stay at 2gb. GTX 970 is a stupid good card for the price.
