So I'm getting a new motherboard and along with it, I want to upgrade my RAM. Is it possible that I buy 3 sticks of 4GB RAM seperately, for a total of 12GB, or even mix 4x4GB or 2x8GB for a total of 16GB? If I do mix, the RAM Sticks are gonna be exactly the same model but I'm not gonna get them in a bundle together, I'm gonna buy em seperately. Is this possible given my motherboards has 4 slots and supports up to 32GB?

Solution
Any time you mix DRAM from different packages, even if SAME EXACT model, it can be and often is problematic - this in part is why say 4 stick packages often cost a little more than getting 2 sets of two sticks - in the four stick package all the sticks are tested to work together.
It depends on the motherboard. If getting a Z97 motherboard, then you should get two or four matching RAM sticks (2x8 GB or 4x4 GB) since Z97 is optimized for dual-channel RAM. If the motherboard is an X79, get four matching sticks (quad-channel RAM). For an X99 motherboard, you need four DDR4 RAM sticks.
