Should using all 4 ram slots on a z97 require any more tweaking than just selecting XMP?

I recently installed a Gigabyte z97x UD5H and a 4790k into the rig in my sig. I reused everything except for the mobo and cpu of course.

I am having an issue when 4 sticks of 2gb ram are installed. It passed Memtest for over 12 hours with no errors but I get random BSODs. I removed two of the sticks and now it is stable. This ram was completely stable in my X58 rig so I doubt the ram is the issue. My assumption is I have to tweak something in the bios besides just selecting XMP. I turned off XMP and adjusted the settings manually but that didn't help.

I have the ram set at 8-8-8-24-2t-1.65 volts. That is what it is rated for and was stable in the X58.

I started another thread about this already. That thread has lead me to believe this is a hardware issue not software. I have done a fresh install of windows 7 and all necessary drivers and Windows updates have been installed. With just 2x2gb sticks installed I ran P95 for almost an hour and the highest core temp hit 70c. My best guess is I need to tweak the ram settings for 4 sticks to be stable.

I am probably just gonna order a set of newer 2x4gb memory. I think the issue is my ram requires 1.65 volts compared to most newer ram only needing 1.5v. I don't know if that is the reason but I am running out of ideas of what to try to get these 4x2gb sticks to work.

Solution
You can try, different chipsets (mobo types) approach DRAM differently, also it depends on how the BIOS is tuned by the programmers. Also sticks in a set are programmed to the set, sosay your X58 was programmed and optimized for tri-channel operations where your new mobo is for dual channel

Kingston but I don't remember the exact model. I will post it when I get home.

It is two triple channel kits of 2x3gb. Identical ram that was stable with all six sticks installed in my X58 mobo with the same timings and voltage.

I am leaning towards the memory controller voltage. I haven't touched any settings in the bios in term of voltage or overclocking yet. I left everything set to auto. The only changes I've tried are XMP and then setting the timings and voltage manually. Either way if 4 sticks are installed I get random BSODs.

I tried manually setting the ram to 9-9-9-27-2t-1.65volts. It crashed within 2 minutes of windows loading. I rebooted and tried to respond to this thread and it crashed again. Every time is a slightly different 0x0 code but it is obvious this issue is memory related not software related.

What is odd is that with 4 sticks installed it passed memtest for over 12 hours. Which leads me to believe the issue is the IMC. Now the question is is there a setting in the bios that may help to stabilize this problem? My gut feeling is to give up and buy a set of compatible 2x4gb ram.

I have come to terms with the Gigabyte z97x and 4790k not liking 4 sticks of my current ram. I have tried everything I can think of and nothing will make it stable. Two sticks is 100% stable but 4 sticks crashes within minutes.

I think my future holds a purchase of 2x4gb compatible ram!

I ordered this set tonight: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?sdtid=7487124&SID=0b257c8fa60347b3b5bcb8e6299a03b5&AID=10440897&PID=1225267&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-_-cables-_-na-_-na&Item=20-231-689&cm_sp=

Hopefully that kit works well. I posted in my original thread about this as well. If you want to close this thread I will just post updates in the original thread going forward.
