So this was possibly the most infuriating computer problem I've ever had because the problem seemed to make no sense and neither did my ultimate resolution for it.
NOTE: I HAVE A DUAL MONITOR SET UP. I DID NOT TEST THIS WITH A SINGLE MONITOR, BUT IT MIGHT WORK FOR YOU
I tried every solution recommended in this thread and any other thread I could find on the topic. Absolutely nothing worked. The only headway I could make was by going into windows safe mode, uninstalling my video card (R9 290) through device manager, then using a driver cleaner, rebooting, and reinstalling ONLY the AMD display driver (not installing anything else). Reboot, then my computer worked normally. "Hooray!" I thought. It's fixed!
Nope, this would only temporarily solve the problem until I rebooted. Upon rebooting my computer, I would be back to square one with a loss of signal to the display after the windows 7 logo loaded.
MY SOLUTION: I have no idea why this worked, or even what possessed my to try this, but I switched the ports my monitors were connected to on my graphics card. This completely 100% solved my problem. I'm not kidding you, I was about ready to return my video card and buy an 970 from nvidia. But simply swapping where I had my monitors plugged fixed the problem.
IF YOU HAVE A SINGLE MONITOR: Try plugging it into a different output on your video card.
I did recently unplug both monitors to move the computer, and the black screen problem showed up shortly after I set my computer back up again. Perhaps I inadvertently switched where I had my monitors plugged in back then. Either way, it doesn't make any damn sense, but that's computers for you. I hope this helps someone in this thread because I have been trying to solve this for two weeks and was literally at my wit's end.
