Hello I would like to thank in advance for any help that the community may give

I bought an external HDD (Seagate Expansion 2 TB) and it worked fine for 3 weeks plugged to a USB 3.0 port on the back of my PC and i had transfer rates read/wright avg 130 mbs, then after the third week the transfer rate dropped to 40 mbs until 2 days later it ceased to get detected by the PC. I discovered that it can still function if i plug it to a USB 2.0 port but that wont fly because i paid for faster rates. Can some someone please help me get a solution, thanks in advance, some useful information follows:

It is connected to an Asus Sabertooth 990fx 2.0 with all drivers up to date
I have downloaded and installed the latest USB controllers for this MB from Asus
It has only been plugged to this PC and to a Samsun Smart TV D8000 series
My OS is Windows 8.1 up to date

Update: while connected to the USB 2.0 port, SeaTools (seagate diagnostic tool) cant find any error on the drive.

Update 2: while connected to the USB 3.0 port the device does not appear even on disk management

If more information is required please let me know

Thanks for the suggestion, will buy one tomorrow and test it. Today I read on the seagate forums that some people are having trouble with the new slim cable they are packing with their HDD. Will report back on the results.

sorry for the delay a had another pc problem (pump of the liquid cooler died), but as you mentioned it was the usb 3.0 cable, a pin came loose on the HDD side so it was recognised as usb 2.0 but not usb 3.0. Apparently it is a not so uncommon issue with the cables Seagate used for the expansion series.
