I have built a PC with an ASRock Fatal1ty H97 Killer motherboard and an i7-4790 processor.

Other hardware:
Memory: KVR16N11K2/16
Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 4600 (onboard)
HDD: Kingston SSDNOW 300, 120 GB (SATA)
ODD: LG BH16NS40 (SATA)
Keyboard: KU-0316 (USB)
Pointing device: Logitech trackball M/N: T-CH11 P/N: 804122-1000 (Trackman Marble)

OS: Windows 7 Professional 64 bit

Looking at Device Manager, I see three yellow question marks at:

Ethernet-controller
PCI simple communications controller (I don’t know what this entry relates to)
Unknown device (I don’t know what this entry relates to)

When − after placing the Support DVD in the drive − I tried to install drivers by means of the system’s driver update function, Windows reported that no driver was found, regardless if I chose automatic search or manual browsing (including search on the whole Support DVD with search in subfolders selected). For network browsing I use a USB network adapter, which works fine. However, that should not be necessary, of course, with a gigabit onboard network adapter.

I would be very grateful for any suggestions that could help me solve this issue.

Solution
Go to the Asrock site for the mobo

For the PCI and unknown dbl click on their entries and go to the details tab change it to hardware ids. Copy one one lines here into google.

The drivers will probably be on the Asrock site

Dont rely on windowsupdate, it doesnt find everything. And it wont get online anyway if no drivers are installed if youre using ethernet.

Thanks to Paul NZ and GhislainG.
For a start, I followed Paul NZ's suggestion, and found the Atheros driver, ver. 1.42.1291 (May 22, 2014), on ASRock's download page. And - yahoo! - now my ethernet. I'll try to follow Paul NZ's suggestions with respect to the other two yellow question marks, although they seem a bit more complicated.
GhislainG, I might want to try out your suggestion as well some time, but for now I think I'll leave it as it is, happy that it's up and running. :)

Actually I wasn't aware that Qualcomm and Atheros was the same thing. Also, I forgot to say that what I needed was a driver for cabled LAN. Sorry, and thanks for your trouble.

I think I've got the latest update, it is from May 22, 2014 and from the ASRock driver site.
