So I'm at a complete loss for words but I'll try my best to explain and hopefully somebody out there has experienced something similar. I built a 4K gaming system last week that looks like this...

Asus PB287Q Monitor
Asus Z97-A mobo
Intel i7 4790K cooled with h100i
Corsair Vengeance 16GB Ram
OS (win 7) running on 256 GB SSD
2TB optical storage
oh and EVGA GTX 980 SC ACX 2.0

Had some original issues with getting past the windows logo without going to black screen, which ended up being Nvidias drivers. They have a beta driver now 344.80 that is supposed to solve the black screen problem, which it mostly has been successful at doing. Other than that issue, sometimes the display drivers would crash and recover, but it infrequent enough that I figured it would be fixed once the drivers were updated again.

I first start to play Far Cry 3 with the new rig, and everything looks and feels absolutely beautiful. Playing on the highest settings, not even the slightest bit of latency. Play this way for about a week, then end up saving the game down in some deep cave late at night. The next day I get home from work, load it up, and can barely even walk. It stutters so bad that I can't walk for longer than 2 seconds without stopping, and most of the time cant begin walking again. Fast travel away, makes no difference - cannot move at all.

Call EVGA and tell them about the display drivers crashing, they recommend I send in for a new card, so I do that. New card arrived last night, I pop it in, same issue though - just cant walk.

Go to bed assuming 1 card simply isnt enough - but confused as to way it worked perfectly for 1 week. I still havent sent the old card in, so I pop that in as well and run it in 2-way SLI - much to my surprise, it makes no difference at all - cannot walk still.

I'm no expert, and I'm not too sure what I should try next. Any suggestions? Thx

Yeah this definitely isn't an issue of the gpu not being enough for 4k, although quite frankly even a gtx980 isn't very good for 4k because of the limitation that the 256 bit memory bus has. It's perfect for 1440p or 1600p but the 4k resolution shows the limit of the 256 bit bus. Going with 2 980's in sli is your best bet at this moment if you want solid fps, unless you can still return the 980's, in which case you would actually get better framerate using 780 ti's due to the 384 bit bus even though it only has 3gb vram, this is especially pronounced when you sli two 780 ti's or titans. But when it comes to games like crysis 3 at 4k, even 2 gtx titan blacks or 780 ti's won't hit 60fps, so unless you plan to ONLY play at 4k, i would...

something is wrong with the drivers or the card it self u should try removing the nvidia drivers and then re installing them

TBH as an amd guy im used to see my drivers crash when i OC too high or i play a new game

but i have never heard of nvidia having that many driver issues ..

But this stuttering issue is something different entirely i'd say, sounds like a driver issue or something; not 100% sure though.
