Hi, I have an Alienware m17x r4 and was planning to upgrade the gpu. Inside, is currently a 1gb, Nvidia Geforce 660m series. I wanted to know if anyone could foresee any problems upgrading from the 1gb, to a 4 gb 660m graphics card. It is only still a laptop after all is said and done.

Solution
It is A LOT of work trying to do it and ultimately, the gains for doing something like this really isn't that great. Unless you happen to come across one thats really cheap, you're almost better off just saving up for a newer laptop/desktop/console.

Dunno where else you can get one but they look pretty expensive http://www.aliexpress.com/wholesale?shipCountry=all&shipCompanies=&SearchText=Alienware&exception=&minPrice=&maxPrice=&minQuantity=&maxQuantity=&isFreeShip=n&isFavorite=n&isRtl=n&isOnSale=n&isAtmOnline=n&isBigSale=n&similar_style=n&similar_style_id=&CatId=708044

You need to get a 660m pulled from another Alienware or else the chances of it working is close to zero.

Not to mention I didn't know a 4GB version of that card existed, the most I've seen is 3GB.

Also, the extra bump in RAM probably isn't going to increase the gaming capability that would be worth the $200+ for the card.

Video cards for laptops work a little differently than they do on desktops.

Laptop GPUs have firmware that's specific to the laptop manufacturer, in other words the GPU on an ASUS laptop will only work on an ASUS laptop/BIOS. If you put in another laptop, like an MSI for example, it won't work because the BIOS won't recognize the GPU. You will have to flash the BIOS of the GPU in order for the laptop's motherboard to recognize it.
